To chime in from the reef world, the expensive stuff is superlative. You can grow just about any coral with strong flow strong lighting and weekly water changes.

If I understood correctly, there really isn't evidence to suggest that bacteria outcompete plants for any available and naturally-occurring NH4. Also, the plants energy expenditure to uptake NO3 and NH4 are relatively the same so this really shouldn't be a reason to prefer one over the other.
You have found that NH4 in the substrate, however, may produce better results. This becomes important when water column fertilization is reduced.

Regarding Randy's post, it was definitely him posting it but I have a feeling he may have been click-baiting and stirring people up.

Great to see @plantbrain chime in. I just got done reading your posts. Now I have to lay down with a cold compress on my forehead for a few minutes. When I come to I am going to attempt to read them again and see if I can digest all of that!!

Off to find Randy Holmes-Farley's planted tank. If i find it ill post a link. As they always say proof is in the pictures.... Most of the reefing hobby find planted tanks way tougher and harder then saltwater and high end corals.
