Several months ago I started up an old 75 gallon All Glass aquarium in the basement for use as a place to maintain species not currently being used in any aquascapes…

After a while I figured I might as well have some fun with the tank as well.

I rejiggered it with some rocks and built a few slab caves and bought a Red Tail Shark and a dozen Tiger Barbs.

This afternoon I transferred them out of Quarantine..

Everybody seemed to approve of the move.

The Red Tail Shark took an immediate shine to the slab cave on the right hand side.

He has been busying himself scouring the tops of all the rocks to mow down on algae…
In 2006 I did these same fish. Was my favorite tank ever. Added yoyos for snails 6 months in. It was endless energy but zero aggression as the shark is too slow for the barbs and the barbs are too busy interacting within their group. Enjoy! Barbs are my all time favorite midwater fish esp Tigers, Rosy and now Ruby.

No rules to follow other than what looks good to me…. What makes me happy….
That has been my motto since I got started!

Tank is looking great. Has a very good vibe about it. Well done!

Well… it has been a while since I last updated…

Quite in need of a trimming to open up and let some light to the bottom…

Reminds me of when I was a kid. My Grandfather was frugal and always had his haircut at the Barber school to save a bit of money. Sometimes the haircuts were not so good. And he would agree and say “Other than the cost, the difference between a good haircut and a not so good haircut is about 2 weeks…. This one might be 3 weeks….

Trimming tanks is mostly the same…

I am thinking a splash of red right there might balance things out well…

This has sort of become my favorite tank…

Fantastic jungle. I responded to the old post before seeing this one. No rules, healthy plants and active fun fish seems like a great recipe for enjoyment to me.

I read that in your journal…

I will say that working with the rules and strictures of Dutch Style was quite helpful to me even if it causes me to chafe a bit on the boundaries. It has been a good discipline.

I am working on another entry with a tank either this year or next. After that, I don’t know if I will keep up with it.

I might venture into nature style, or more along the lines of this basement tank with a bit more wood and rock hardscape and try working a bit more with plants that just don’t require so much upkeep as stem heavy Dutch…

Thank you for the compliment Gregg. It means a lot…

Grandfather was a wise man
For a man who only progressed to a 6th grade education, having grown up speaking French only at home, but picked up English so he could speak with the English boys so he could play baseball he accomplished quite a bit.

He taught himself Carpentry, had very good mechanical aptitude, and having turned 14 when the great depression hit he learned that must do was a good master and he learned how to patch and that it wasnt as important how much you made as it was how much you kept of what you made.

He did well for himself, and I reaped benefits if lessons he taught me…
