Journal Dutchy Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

So quick update, I was working on what I felt like was a pretty good Dutch for the AGA this year, deadline last part of OCT. But they asked me to be a judge. So looks like Im a judge now

With social media what it is its impossible not to see people tanks and know who some of them are. That wont be an issue. But I wont be addressing anybody's current scapes theyre working on for the contest, either on the board or in pm. Just tanks that are bound to be an AGA entry. Might tell you it looks good, but I cant tell you the left side is weak or this plant could go there, etc. Things like that

I hope all you guys got some good stuff ready. Im expecting big things from you! You know who you are

Moving on. Heres a quick pic from the living room tanks. The 75p on the right has some Ammania action going on. Im running my new low-energy all in one in that one. Its a little lower across the board than my normal macros and micros, same routine Ive posted many times here. And also has proportionately lower NO3. Each dose adds 2.5/1/4.4 macros, and .1 Fe

I do a double dose after 50% water change, then two more doses through the week. Same way I do the regular macros, can think of it as 3x per week just a double dose after the water change

Its working pretty great so far. I was concerned about some of the fast growing stuff, and whether itd be enough for K hogs like the Hygro 53B. Turns out it is. Best 53B in the house matter of fact! lol I also use it on farms if I get lazy and skip water changes, after that first week I just go to this for another week or sometimes two. We can talk more specifics later

Bonus pic. Farms usually stay butchered up but every now and then one looks decent for a minute ;)

Will have more coming soon!

By the way, @gjcarew and I both agree we are angry the AGA sniped you as a judge. No more Joe Harvey entries for us to study. Year after year, you pull off amazing Dutch tanks, and sadly...this ends this year.

Hah, thanks bro. I wasnt ready to stop competing. I dont feel like Ive made a really good technical Dutch yet and I wanted to get one officially out there. But Ive decided to try to do that anyway and just post about it, primarily here and on social etc. It changed my whole outlook on the personal side of the hobby. Kinda had to comes to terms with it, if that makes sense. So Im gonna have one soon to journal about right here. I really appreciate the kind words <3

What do you use for lighting? Have a favorite brand and model or do you use a mix?
I see you posted this early in the journal: Lighting: 4x 48" T5HO VivoSun hydroponic light unit. Bulbs are 1x Powerveg 660, 1x ATI Purple, 2x iSun T5 LED. Lights run 8 hours full blast. PAR at the sub is around 120 uMol

Thats still the light I have on the 75 gal living room tank. When these last T5 bulbs pop Im gonna switch to a week aqua or something. They just arent making bulbs any more. Plus LED has come a long way these days, power + color is commonplace

Boy this thread needs some action. I miss having one tank to make a dutch in every year. I still dont think I ever made a truly good one. My intention is to be working on one in one of the living room tanks, and post about it here, just havent done that yet

Speaking of the living room tanks, here they both sit today, mostly farms not really scaped

The 37 gal 75p

I topped this Lud meta 10 days ago. Its just been sitting there bunched up at the bottom, not even planted and hasnt missed a beat. Try that with lean dosing in the water column lol, or crappy ferts period

Im just gonna pinch a few inches off the bottom about where my thumb is at, bundle them back up again to sell. Cant really see but the rooted bottoms these came from are in back with lots of tiny new stems about to sprout

Boom

That one tallest top that looks a little gnarly had breached the surface, itll re-conform in a day or two. All the rest, perfect, and closing up for the night

Next post, the 75 gal

Man I screwed up bad a couple months ago. This was a brand new tank, not a scratch on it. There mustve been some sand caught in my scrub pad that I didnt notice. Luckily this was the only tank. Sigh...

Moving on

Here's another new addition not on the sale list yet. Nymphaea micranthra AKA Tri-color Lily. Its a monster Lily. I just keep the oldest biggest leaves pinched off. This is mostly a bunch of young ones together

Cant cut all the older leaves off because it <sometimes> makes babies from the mature leaves! How cool is this

Other end

See that spot algae on a couple of the oldest leaves on the left Iguazu? No big deal, theyre old leaves I'll just pinch em off. Problem solved

Guess thats all for now

Looks like that's just BDBS. Any root tabs or anything else under it, or is this just solely water column fertilization?
Blasting sand w zero root tabs. Sometimes Ill put a few single O+ balls under a rosette, but it just speeds it up. Ive never once experienced root tabs save something that was doing poorly. This is with rich water column dosing, mind you. In a real lean wc roots tabs can certainly save something, just not in my set ups with already rich water

I assumed that was the case. I know a few others here have the same setup and I'm about to start cycling my 75g Garden/Farm tank with the same in the next couple days. I just like having that extra data point, especially knowing I'll be using your ferts.

Bull :poop:

Loved your scapes back in the day.

Thanks, and I get that. What I mean is from a technical standpoint, a truly good one. They all had one or two glaring weaknesses. Most tanks do though, even the "good ones".

The living room 75 is looking pretty Dutch right now. The oranges in both back corners are just bunched and sitting there. Id never use colors like that in those spots. Everything else is planted and growing. It wouldnt take much to carve out a decent one from this, makes me wish I was entering...

Quick pic right after messing around in it, a little cloudy from dust

Also if anybody's in the market Im having a flash sale starting now thru Fri the 22nd, all plants 15% off, over $100 gets 20% off!! Check it out :)

If you judge, are you prohibited from entering all categories?
Not sure Id have to ask. Im not able to see other categories entries or anything. This new category theyre having sounds intriguing, "inspired by ScapeCrunchs garden Style contest" . I dont have any inside info on it atm. Might be judging that too idk

Yeah, that’s what I thinking. It would be great if you could enter the new Classic category. I would like to see that!
