Beware of Temu Purigen

Bought a bag off Amazon. $15 for like 400ml. 2 big bags worth.

Added it to tank.
Tds spiking everyday.
From 150 to 400 tds after a week.
Thought substrate was just leeching.

I eventually just soaked the bag in RO water for a few days until the tds stopped spiking so much. Maybe I should just soak it in bleach first before use?

Nah it was blatantly a seachem copy cat.
Packaging looked very similar to purigen but it clearly had their own words/logo on it.

About 6 months ago I tired of the whole bleaching a d dechlorinating of used Purigen, and just dispensed with it as a pain in the keister…

I have not noticed any discernible difference in the tanks…

Nope, clearly off brand
But I'm pretty sure all offbrand purigen will be the same since Chinese Amazon's sellers typically buy from the same factory anyways.

I can’t dispute that Purigen does pull things out of the water column. After a month in the canister fiter the Purigen is very dark brown. Even with weekly 66% water changes…

Subjectively though. I cant discriminate a scintilla of difference with observing the tank.

I had the same experience some years ago.
I am sure it has benefits and helps in some situations, but I couldn’t see anything noticeable change when I stopped using it.

I think it's best benefit is helping clear tannins in a tank with new driftwood.
