I've owned Chihiros lights for over a year. I almost always remove the shades while doing maintenance (they were knocked into the water a couple times early on). This morning during routine maintenance, I discovered for the first time, the reflective panel in the shades has a clear protective plastic covering. 😲 All this time I just assumed it was a soft reflective panel. After removing the cover; surprise, surprise, it's a mirror finish. Please tell me I'm not the only one who didn't know this. LOL!

Nope, you are not alone. The Vivid 3's I got this year are my first hanging Chihiros lights with shades. They had been hanging up for several weeks before I scaped the tank. While arranging some rocks I bumped one of the shades, which promptly fell, and it hit the tank floor. Fortunately nothing broke, as there was no water in the tank yet, but one of the mirrors slid half way out when I picked it up. That was when I noticed the same thing. That they have a protective film over the mirrors. Who knew?! Totally a 'DOH!' moment

Watch, you'll get an algae bloom from all the extra light.
